Javier Echeverría holds a PhD in Chemistry from the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. He currently serves as FONDECYT postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratorio de Química Ecológica, Universidad de Chile. His area of expertise is Phytochemistry, and he has worked on the identification and synthetic modification of secondary metabolites isolated from the native flora of Chile, looking for new molecules with activity against bacteria, fungi and insects. In recent years he has focused his interest in ethnopharmacology through of the study of the alkaloids of native flora and their presence in archaeological remains. His current research is the study of psychoactive potential of the flora of northern Chile and its possible use by pre-Hispanic populations.
