The Aymara people live close to the Andes mountain range in South America and have been through a process of urban migration in Chile. Many have moved from the altiplano to the coastal cities Arica and Iquique of Northern Chile. As reported by www.indigenousnews.org the mental health of Aymara children has recently been assessed. In a report by Chilean authors published in the academic journal BMC Psychiatry, it was found that while absolute levels of common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression were not different from non-Aymara children, those Aymara with strong involvement with their own culture showed significantly lower levels of mental health symptoms. The authors suggest that such involvement may constitute a protective factor against psychological distress.
