Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat last night against Athletic Bilbao, saw the home team at Old Trafford well and truly beaten. It was an excellent spectacle for fans and neutrals alike but ultimately it was the highly motivated and aggressive pack-like football by Bilbao that won the day. The team appear to have been inspired by coach Marcelo Bielsa, who previously held the reins for the nation Chilean team. The away victory prompted the online Chilean newspaper emol.com to call the defeat a ‘lesson in football’ by the Basque visitors. Bielsa joined the club in July 2011 after a good outing in the 2010 World cup taking Chile to the last 16 (knocked out by Brazil), and after several other offers fell through (e.g. Inter Milan). Bielsa or ‘El Loco’ as he is sometimes known has a good track record at both Club and national level (see below) leading some to speculate that he should be offered the job at Chelsea.

But as Bielsa has said himself, the win will only really mean something if Bilbao can repeat the performance at home next Thursday. Let’s see what happens…
